   Computer Tips & Tricks

New Year Special- 2 Tips for the Price of 1 !

Windows
- How fast is your computer? If you have the newest version of DirectX loaded, try this trick: Click Start, Run and then type DXDIAG and hit ENTER. Look in the Processor field and it will give the approximate speed in mhz.

Windows - You can print most documents without opening them by right-clicking on their icon and choosing "Print." Quite a time-saver!

Internet
- Annoyed that Microsoft Instant Messenger starts up automatically, whether you use it or not? Turn it off: Open the Messenger, choose Tools, Options, and then deselect "Run this program when Windows starts."

Internet - In Outlook, open a contact record, pull down the Actions menu, and choose "Display Map of Address." Check it out!

Word - Above the vertical scroll bar (right above the up button), you will see a small rectangle. Grab it and drag it down to open "another" window in the same document. Excellent for comparing two sections in the same file!

Word - Need a quick English-to-Spanish translation of a document? In the newest version of Word, pull down the Tools menu, choose Language, and then Translate. Nifty!

Excel - Sometimes you want to see how changing one cell affects others. Instead of jumping all over a worksheet finding the differences, simply turn on the Watch Window toolbar. Right-click on any toolbar and click on "Watch Window."

Excel - Select multiple, non-contiguous cells by holding down the Ctrl key while you click! Select a range of contiguous cells by holding down the Shift key while clicking. Works in Word, Access, and PowerPoint!

QuickBooks - When setting your Preferences, DO NOT select Autofill payee account number in the check memo. Instead, type your account # in the last line of the address field. Save the Memo field for the actual "Memo".

QuickBooks -  If you only have one checking account choose Start with payee field on check. This will save time when writing checks!

One of the 1st things you should always do when starting QuickBooks is set your Preferences! Go to Edit > Preferences. Company preferences are set regardless who is logged in. "My Preferences" is for individual users to be able to modify their settings.

   Workplace Topic

Safe Assumptions

Most people realize that making assumptions is not always the smart thing to do and can get you into some serious trouble. As the saying goes: "When you ASSUME, you make an ..." (You know the rest of the saying). Nevertheless, as humans we all tend to make them. Here are some safe ones...

Things you can feel okay in assuming:

    • The emails you send will be seen by more people than those they're addressed to.
    • Things said "just between you and me" won't stay that way.
    • The time you pick to take a long break or lunch will be the same time your boss looks for you.
    • The "minor" rule you choose to ignore will be the pet peeve of the manager that catches you.
    • Call in sick so you can do something else and you will be seen by someone who knows you should be working.
    • Treat one customer poorly, and ten people will hear about it- including someone who has authority over you.
    • Your ability to get "another job" will be directly related to how well you do on the job you have now.
    • Whenever you think "no will know", someone will.
    • Whenever you think "no one will care", someone will.
    • Whenever you think "it will never be missed", it will.
    • Whenever you think you're as good as you need to be, you aren't.

  Technical Humor

Compaq is considering changing the command "Press Any Key" to "Press Return Key" because of the flood of calls asking where is the "Any" key?

Bill Gates, founder of the Microsoft Corporation and the world's riches man, summed
it up with these words:

"Any business that hopes to succeed in the future must have an Internet Presence."
