 Computer Tips & Tricks

Windows - If you'd like to examine the path of a file or shortcut, one easy way is to click "Start, Run", then drag the icon from your desktop or Explorer window into the "Run" window.  The path and file name, including extension, will be displayed.

Internet
- Forwarding a joke to a group of people? Put their addresses in the BCC (blind carbon copy) field. Not only do you reduce the clutter in the forwarded headers, you protect their addresses from those that might send junk.

Word - Change the direction of your text! While in a table, pull down the "Table" menu and choose "Text Direction." Makes your reports more readable and professional looking!

Excel
- Tired
of seeing "Clippy the Paper Clip" whenever you compose a letter? How about a change? Bring up the annoying guy by clicking on the question mark on the toolbar. Choose "Options" and then "Gallery".  My favorite
replacement is "Einstein!"

QuickBooks
- When paying your payroll taxes put the date of the liabilities in the memo instead of your tax identification number. It makes it so much easier when looking at a report to know what tax period you have paid.

PowerPoint You have added a video file to your presentation and now you want to make it pay full screen.  Right click on the video object and choose "Edit Movie Object."  Select "Zoom to Full Screen" and away you go!

  Workplace Topic

Are you or your employees tired before the day begins?  Do you suffer chronic aches and pains (real or imaginary)? Find you're not giving clients your absolute best? If so, you may be losing the battle against stress. According to Human Resource News (Nov. 1988), "stress has increased dramatically as a reason why today's employees are missing work, almost tripling since 1995."

What can individuals do?
To beat stress, an individual must be able to identify the symptoms and begin to change the way they think about themselves and outside factors. For example: Guidelines for Positive Thinking:
  • RECOGNIZE, when negative thoughts pop into your head
  • REWARD, say to yourself "good for you!" for a job well done
  • OR, forgive yourself for mistakes...and move on
  • STOP! Imagine a mental stop sign that will put the brakes on destructive thoughts
  • REMEMBER,  you can make a mistake, but you're not a mistake

    Six Steps to Assertive Behavior:

  1. Express your honest feelings in a calm, non threatening way
  2. When appropriate, establish a mutually agreeable time and place to assert yourself
  3. Describe the other person's behavior objectively, without judging or devaluing
  4. Avoid delivering put downs disguised as "honest feelings"
  5. Be aware of your need for approval and/or acceptance
  6. Confine your response to the specific problem behavior - not the whole person
