  Computer Tips & Tricks

Access -  To create a quick form or report, select the table you want, click insert menu, then click AutoForm or AutoReport.

Excel - Leave a Virtual Sticky Note. Right-click on a cell and choose "Insert Comment." Every time you mouse over one of those cells, it will pop up!

Word
 -  An easy way to dress up your Word XP document is to pull down the "Format" menu and choose "Themes...."

Windows
 - What Version of Windows are you running? To find out, open your "My Computer" window, pull down the Help menu and choose "About..."

Internet Position your mouse pointer over any item in your Favorites List. Right-Click and choose "Make Available Offline". Now, whether you're on the Internet or not, you can surf this site. Be careful, though; it does eat disk space.

QuickBooks
 - Sales Tax- Cash or Accrual? If the amount of sales tax you owe appears to be incorrect, check to make sure you've set up your preferences correctly, telling QuickBooks when you owe sales tax. You may be paying sales tax on an accrual basis.  That could mean paying sales tax on money you never receive ! Check with your CPA to see if you should be tracking your sales tax on a cash basis, or when you actually receive money from your customer. To verify your sales tax is set up correctly,
follow these steps:
1. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences
2. On the left side of the window, click the Sales Tax icon
3. Select the Company Preferences tab
4. Under Owe Sales Tax, select  "Upon receipt of payment"

  How to Encourage Honest Feedback

Input from bosses, co-workers or employees are the best tool you have to improve
your performance. But you may be unintentionally sending the message that any criticism- constructive or not- is unwelcome. Even a slightly negative cue can effectively cut off communication.

Here's how to convey that you're open to input from others:

  • Remember, giving feedback is a risk. Offering constructive criticism is like walking through a minefield. Thank those who take that risk. This reassurance will encourage them to keep communication open and honest.
  • Assume they want to help. People who offer feedback are most likely doing so because they want to improve their relationship with you. Those who just want to gripe rarely tell you what they're thinking.
  • Assume the feedback is accurate. Perception is reality. If others say your actions have a negative effect on them, that's the truth - regardless of what you intended. Explaining your intentions can help, but it doesn't solve the problem. You must change your behavior to make a positive impact.
  • Think now, act later. Exposing a shortcoming almost always hits a nerve, so distance yourself from feedback before you decide what to do about it.

Don't Waste Money on Government Forms or Labor Law Posters!

Various government agencies are warning employers about misleading ads suggesting that you must buy
certain government forms and posters from private companies. In truth, most documents that you need to use and post in your workplace can be found FREE on government web sites.

Example: The Labor Department's poster page,
www.dol.gov/osbp/sbrefa/poster, lets you
download the required labor-related posters. Tip: Web sited ending in ".gov" are the only official government sites. Some private ".com" sites sell documents using official looking government sites but are not the real deal.

  Remove One Simple Word!

Get rid of the word "but". Anytime you say "but" you're really saying you
disagree. Instead, try using "and" to pave the way toward agreement.
Example: Instead of "I see your point but I'd like to give it more thought",
try "I see your point and I'd like to give it more thought".

  Email and Video Oh My!

You can do a lot of amazing things with your Logitech? QuickCam? Webcam. But here's one that's
really cool - use it to send video e-mails! It's fun and easy.
Here's how:
Launch the QuickCam software.

  • In the sidebar, click "Video E-mail."
  • In the "Create Video Mail" box, click "Create a Picture or Video," which opens the  "QuickCapture" box.
  • In the "QuickCapture" box, click "Record a Video" to begin; when you're done with your video, click "Record a Video" again to stop.
  • In the "Create Video Mail" box, click "Create E-mail". Your e-mail client will open a new message window Insert e-mail address, subject line, and message, and click send.
  • Go ahead and try it. Your friends and family are sure to get a kick out of seeing you
    with your message.

  Technical Humor

                                     Hands-On Management

Three investors pooled their money and started a company. At their  first organizational meeting, they chose what work they would do. The first investor said, "I put up 60 percent of the capital so I get to be president and chairman of the board."
The second investor said, "Since I supplied the next 35 percent of the funds, I claim the jobs of senior vice president and treasurer."
The third investor said, "Well, I put up 5 percent, but you two have hogged all the big jobs".
The first investor said, "Okay, I'll appoint you vice president of digital responsiveness."
"Great," said the third investor", but how does that work? Something like computers?"
The first investor said, "No. It means that when I want your advice, I'll snap my fingers."
